Business English 2 Exercise

Hi, welcome to my blog. In this post i will show you exercise 21-30 from my textbook,

Exercise 21 No 1 :
Question:
Henry talks to his dog as if it             (understand) him.
Answer:
Henry talks to his dog as if it understood/could understand (understand) him.
Analysis:
It’s about conditional sentences that the word understand turn into verb-2 understood, because the verb following the conjunction (talks) is present tense.

Exercise 22 No 1:
Question:
 I was used to                (eat) at noon when I started school.
Answer:
I was used to eating (eat) at noon when I started school.
Analysis:
It’s about “used to” sentence that the word eat ended with -ing because there is a to-be “was” before “used to”, the first sentence is in past continuous tense, and the second sentence is past tense.

Exercise 23 No 1:
Question:
We would rather          (stay) home tonight.
Answer:
We would rather stay (stay) home tonight.
Analysis:
It’s about Would Rather topic that the word stay is still in a simple form because the be “would rather” is in simple present tense that must be followed by verb 1.

Exercise 24 No 1:
Question:
Henri was deported for having an expired visa. He                          (have) his visa renewed.
Answer:
Henri was deported for having an expired visa. He should have had (have) his visa renewed.
Analysis:
It’s about must/should + perfective sentence that the word have turn to had because the previous sentence is a past tense, so the next sentence must be in past perfect tense

Exercise 25 No 1:
Question:
If I had a bicycle, (I would/I will) ride it everyday.
Answer:
If I had a bicycle, (I would/I will) ride it everyday.
Analysis:
It’s about modals + perfective sentence that the answers is I would because the tenses in previous sentence is using past tense and the next sentence will be in past form, past future tense

Exercise 26 No 1:
Question:
Rita plays the violin (good/well).
Answer:
Rita plays the violin (good/well).
Analysis:
It’s about Adjective and adverbs sentence that the answer is well because plays is a verb that have to be modified by an adverb

Exercise 27 No 1:
Question
Your cold sounds (terrible/terribly).
Answer:
Your cold sounds (terrible/terribly).
Analysis:
It’s about linking (copulative) verbs that the answer is terrible, because the verb sounds link the subject with the predicate adjective terrible that not show action.

Exercise 28 No 1:
Question:
John and his friends left             (soon) as the professor finished his lecture.
Answer:
John and his friends left as soon (soon) as the professor finished his lecture.
Analysis:
It’s about comparisons that the word soon become as soon because it is an equal comparison that the second entities followed by “as”

Exercise 29 No 1:
Question:
The Empire State Building is taller                the Statue of Liberty.
Answer:
The Empire State Building is taller than the Statue of Liberty.
Analysis:
It’s about comparisons that the answer is than because there are two object in this sentence to be compared, Empire State Building and Statue of liberty

Exercise 30 No 1:
Question:
Of the four dresses, I like the red one (better/best)
Answer:
Of the four dresses, I like the red one (better/best)
Analysis:
It’s about comparisons superlative degree that the answer is best because there are more than three object (four dresses) compared in the first sentence
